Support Us

Frensham Pond Sailability is a unique facililty on the Surrey/Hampshire border for adults and children who need support during sailing because of their disabilities or long term illness. Sailing ranges from therapeutic cruising around  to fully competitive racing in Paralympic class mini-keelboats on Frensham Pond and at other sailing locations in the UK and in Europe. Provision of an active on-shore social programme is also an important objective and benefit.

Why the community needs us

Sailing has an extraordinarily beneficial impact upon the lives of people with a very wide range of disabilities or long term illnesses. Frensham Pond Sailability gives disabled people a new sense of freedom and, for the more profoundly disabled, a sensory experience to enhance the quality of their lives. In doing so, it also enhances the lives of all our volunteers, without whom we could not provide this service to the community.

Our impact on the community

Frensham Pond Sailability meets every Thursday and on Saturday mornings from April through to the end of October. Sailors, coming regularly or on one-off visits, attend independently or through organisations such as special schools or adult support organisations. We encourage independent sailing, including competitive racing. Our racing sailors have retained the National Hansa Travellers Trophy for a number of years and regularly win National Championships.

Donate

Frensham Pond Sailability is a registered charity and relies on gifts for most of its income. We keep administrative costs to a minimum and around 95 per cent of those gifts goes directly to benefit our sailors. Every donation helps but if you use one of our suggested methods we can recover or save a large amount of tax to boost your gift.

It costs about £40,000 each year to run Sailability.  This includes major capital items such as replacing or adding to our fleet of 29 boats as well as on-going operating costs such as insurance, boat maintenance and the use of Frensham Pond Sailing Club facilities.

Less than 20% of our annual income comes from sailing fees paid by our Sailor Members. These fees are kept as low as possible to minimise any economic barriers to participation. The balance has to come from on-going donations, sponsorships and a range of fundraising activities.

FUNDRAISING - SPONSORSHIP

Over the years, Frensham Pond Sailability has been fortunate to enjoy the support of many local charities, companies and organisations. This has enabled us to buy capital items such as boats, vital equipment such as buoyancy aids and life jackets and contribute towards annual maintenance costs. Two examples where sponsorships have been particularly valuable are:

  • In 2016, the completion of a £32,000 jetty extension project which significantly increased our capacity to safely handle sailors who require hoisting to and from boats.

  • In 2014, the establishment a Saturday morning youth development programme to help young sailors follow a constructive step by step approach to sailing appropriate to their level. This has proved to be very successful and popular

If you would like to find out more about sponsoring a capital item, equipment or activity and how this could work with you or your organisation then please contact Simon Crowther at Email : Funding.FPSailability@gmail.com . Ideas include: special events, cycling events, concerts, Company bonding days, D of E activities.
